Volunteer Opportunities
Grand Staircase Escalante Partners is changing its volunteer program into a more science-based program that focuses on long-term research projects on the Monument.
New volunteers can sign up by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page. If you've volunteered before, simply contact Melanie (435 826 5604; melanie@gsenm.org) or Beth (435 644 4388; beth@gsenm.org) if you'd like to participate in these exciting projects.
Summer 2010 projects
- The Hummingbird Monitoring Network - a group of scientists, citizens, land managers and property owners dedicated to the tiny birds' diversity and abundance in the Americas - needs volunteers for monitoring work this summer and fall. The work generally takes place on Tuesday or Wednesday mornings, at the Escalante Interagency Visitor Center and Calf Creek Campground.
- Volunteers are needed to collect and report on all varieties of insects in the Calf Creek and Sand Creek areas. GSENM Biologist Terry Tolbert will train volunteers to collect bugs, record water temperatures and other data, and report the findings back to the bug lab at Utah State University. The research aims to discover how the removal of tamarisk and Russian olive will affect insect life in the area.
