Volunteer Opportunities at Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

Administrative/Support Services

That all important office work that keeps everything flowing smoothly.

Backcountry Patrols

Discover and explore on your own, or with a partner, you’ll traverse the Monument on foot or in a vehicle, ensuring the land is being honored. While making contact with the public, you’ll maintain trails and campsites, disseminating park and Leave No Trace information. You’ll compile visitor statistics, remove litter and work with Park Rangers to keep off-route areas habitable.

Campground Hosts

You’ll deal with the public using the campgrounds, educating them on Leave No Trace, and how to traverse the Monument lightly and intelligently.

Equestrian Patrols

While on horseback, you’ll monitor backcountry routes, Wilderness Study Areas (WSAs), campsites and day use areas. You’ll assist the public as needed.

Paleontology Field/Lab

Search and collect fossils of dinosaurs and invertebrates. Prepare specimens for study and display. This is done under the direction of Dr. Alan Titus.

Portal Kiosk Signs/Brown BLM Information Signs Maintenance

Clean and maintain the all important Monument interpretive and information signs.

Tamarisk GPS Mapping Resource Assistant

Hike and record the presence of Tamarisk in specific areas using GPS.

Stream Water Sampling Assistant

Assist hydrologist in the field collecting stream water samples and calculating flow measurements.

Visitor Center Assistant

Assist GSENM Visitor Centers located in Escalante, Cannonville, Kanab and Big Water. Volunteers provide information about GSENM and the surrounding region while meeting visitors from around the world.

Wildlife Observers

GSENM offers many opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts. The Monument is home to world class mule deer that is second to none in Utah. Other big game includes pronghorn antelope and desert bighorn sheep. Other wildlife opportunities include bird watching, reptiles and 600 species of native bees. The Monument offers volunteer opportunities to assist biologists as they radio track wildlife, make seasonal counts of sage grouse, or follow a pronghorn around.
