ABOUT THE POSITION

Grand Staircase Escalante Partners (GSEP) is hiring a Wyss Fellow to join our Team and help us build our presence in the region, enhance our digital advocacy strategy, and recruit volunteers and members who support Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and its connected landscapes and watersheds. The goals of this position are to (1) deeply collaborate with the entire GSEP team to develop a digital advocacy strategy and media, (2) partner with the Executive Director to create a library of material that builds awareness of the importance of the Monument as an outdoor science laboratory, and (3) build the pro-Monument community throughout the region.

The Wyss Fellow will have strong support, guidance and mentorship from their supervisor (GSEP’s Executive Director, Dr. Jackie Grant), as well as the Development Director and other members of the team.

This is a Regular, Full-Time Position, Term Limited to 2 Years (January 2027 through December 2028).

ABOUT GSEP

Grand Staircase-Escalante Partners (GSEP) is the nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM). The mission of Grand Staircase-Escalante Partners is to honor the past and safeguard the future of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and its connected landscapes and watersheds through science, conservation, and education. Located in southern Utah, the 1.88 million-acre Monument is home to incredible biodiversity, important cultural and historical resources, and countless opportunities for scientific research. Due to the geographic remoteness and rugged character of this landscape, this region was the last area to be mapped in the contiguous United States and remains a frontier for exploration and discovery. Today, the Monument and its surrounding areas are also known for their significance to Native American Tribes, and incredible recreational opportunities.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Implement components of our 2026 communications strategy related to the
    Campaign to Keep Utah Monumental.
  • Recruit volunteers for tabling at events where GSEP shares information about the Monument and attempts to downsize it or undermine its protections.
  • Assist the Development Director with developing and distributing pro-Monument themed swag such as stickers, postcards, and other paraphernalia.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, develop talking points and factsheets related to the Monument and Public Lands.
  • Assist the Executive Director and Native Plant Coordinator with pro-Monument community building efforts such as development of the Utah Native Seed Network, participation in the annual Grand Staircase Escalante Symposium, presentations at the Escalante Canyons Art Festival, and other recurring events.

QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES

Any equivalent life experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position will be considered. For example, the requisite experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities could include:

  • A degree or equivalent experience in biology, botany, wildlife management, outdoor recreation, public engagement, or educational outreach
  • A strong commitment to the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, its geology, wildlife, and plants
  • Strong written communication, oral communication, and active listening skills
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to effectively manage multiple complex workflows
  • Respect and understanding for others and the competing demands on their time
  • Ability to advocate for oneself without becoming combative
  • Deep wells of patience

  • Personal experience with the outdoors in southern Utah
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Demonstrated social media skills or follower base

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The work environment and physical demands described here are representative of those required by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodations.

The work environment is split between a typical office environment with minimal exposure to excessive noise or adverse environmental issues, and field conditions that require protective footwear, adequate hydration, and sun protection.

Prolonged periods of time at a desk and working on a computer.
‍
This position requires substantial travel by automobile, airplane, etc.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Travel (including occasional travel outside of Utah) to meetings, conferences, and other work-related events including Wyss Fellows Program meetings, will be required. This is in addition to travel required for visiting field teams, traveling to tabling events, GSEP retreats, and other internal organizational meetings (approximately 20% to 30% depending on the location of work).

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The salary for this position is $68,000.

Position is full-time exempt.

GSEP’s benefits package includes a 401(k)-retirement plan, and health, dental, and life & disability insurance with an annually determined percentage of premiums paid by GSEP. Staff may earn up to 80 hours of paid vacation leave and 40 hours of paid sick leave per year. GSEP offers paid holidays and, at the discretion of the Executive Director, is closed for Winter Break between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day for additional paid time off. GSEP employs the 100-80-100 four-day work week model for exempt employees.
