The competition was tough because of the many splendid creatures that inhabit Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, but the rufous hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus) is our new Monument champion AND inspiration for our new logo. The Monument is central to the rufous hummingbird’s annual migration, and it provides the birds with crucial nectar from wildflowers. GSEP was inspired by rufous hummingbirds because they are relentless attackers that aren’t afraid to take on other hummingbirds twice their weight. The persistence, fearlessness, and territoriality of these little birds inspires us in our work to keep the Monument intact at the size it was always meant to be: 1.87 million acres.
